iRig MIDI – Review
Apple’s range of iPad, iPod Touch
and iPhone products, are increasingly becoming a great tool
for the many musicians, with third party developers releasing
great music apps on the market. If you are looking for a way
to control these apps with your MIDI equipped devices then
you will find the iRig MIDI and incredibly useful little device.
At an initial glance the iRig
feels like a simple yet solid device and the quality is instantly
noticeable. It has an interface to connect to your apple device
which fits in snuggly (note that with the new iPhone 5 and
iPad 4 models you will need an adapter for the lightning port),
connections for MIDI in, thru and out, and a micro USB port
to charge your device while in use.
Setup is straightforward and you
just need to plug in to your MIDI compatible device, which
includes keyboards, drum machines, sound modules and more.
After testing it with my iPad and a few different MIDI enabled
keyboards I found that it would work perfectly out of the
box every time.
I attempted to plug in my M-Audio
Oxygen USB Midi Controller using the micro USB connection
out of curiosity but no luck, as the USB port is supplied
for charging purposes only. Although the device is clearly
advertised as a MIDI interface, many musicians use USB controllers
these days, and having this port available would be an added
The iRig includes SampleTank
Free and iRig MIDI Recorder FREE, although these can also
be downloaded from the iTunes app store. Perhaps a voucher
code to download an upgrade pack for SampleTank would have
been a nice inclusion. MIDI Recorder is useful, and SampleTank
is great, although the free version is more of a demo and
you need to purchase the sound upgrade packs to make it shine.
Overall the iRig MIDI is a good
quality device that works straight out of the box without
any fuss. IK multimedia has developed another great product
here to help you get more musical goodness out of your iDevice.
